Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American artist and rapper, best recognized under the stage name, Queen Latifah. Her work as a music, film and TV artist has earned the actress two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded a Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was born in and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. as a police officer. Their divorce occurred at the age of Latifah was ten years old. Latifah attended a Catholic school and received her education at Newark New Jersey. She attended the Baptist church. Her stage name Latifah meaning delicate and very gentle in Arabic was handed to her by her cousin when she was only eight. Being a tall girl, her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a forward for her basketball team in high school. In her high school's play, Latifah performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah began beatboxing with the fresh rap ladies. Latifah used to be a member of the Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo of Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. He handed the recording over to Yo! MTV Raps is Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song, and then made a deal with Latifah in 1988, to drop her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
