Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson, an iron worker, and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy is the eldest out of 6 siblings. Nancy's father was an avid musician and would play records at home. It had a huge influence on her as a child. When she was just 4years old, Nancy was aware that her future was as a singer. The talent she had developed was discovered through singing in the church choir. The show was on television in her 15th year and then began appearing regularly on the Tv program Skyline Melodies while still in high school. Around the same time, she began to work in nightclubs. Nancy was 17 when she had graduated high school, and then matriculated in Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for an entire year prior to deciding to become a singer. She made her first recording with Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, who she performed with between 1956 and 1958. Nancy began recording for Dot Records in 1956, when she was part of the band. Cannonball Aderley suggested that she move into New York so as to increase her chances of success. In 1959 she moved to The Big Town. The singer was brought in to sing in The Blue Morocco Night Club in The Bronx and there was a place where Adderley's agent had heard her. The contract was signed signing her with Capitol Records in the year 1960. she debuted that year by releasing the single. Guess Who Saw Today. Capitol released five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Adderley influenced her to move away from R&B in favor of the torch and jazz genres. Nancy Wilson's collaboration in 1962 with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top and, in 1963 she scored her first hit Tell Me the Truth. The performance brought her to the stage at New York Coconut Grove in 1963. It was the most crowded in America's nightclub.
