Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe to Olden Wilson, an iron worker, and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was the youngest of six kids. Nancy's father was an avid fan of music and loved to play records with his children at home. This was a major influence upon her growing up. When she was young she had already developed an idea of who she was and what she hoped to accomplish. The choir at church encouraged her to develop the talent. She then dropped out to pursue a profession as professional musician. In 1956, she recorded her debut record with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with whom she toured from 1956 between 1956 and 1958. Nancy released her first album on Dot Records while in the group. Cannonball Adderley told her to move into New York to further her professional career. She moved into The Big Town at the end of 1959. Her agent heard her speak in The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she then signed her contract.
