Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winner in jazz. Her birth date was the 20th of February, 1937 in Chillicothe Ohio, to Olden Wilson who was a worker at an ironworks and Lillian Ryan, a former domestic worker. Nancy is the eldest among six children. Nancy was heavily influenced by her father's taste in music and the records that were played in her family home. At the age of 4, Nancy already knew her destiny was to be an artist. The talent she had developed was discovered by singing with the choir of her church. When she won a talent contest on TV around the age of 15, she started appearing regularly in Skyline Melodies, while still in high school. The nightclubs where she was a regular performer, she began singing at the age of 15. Nancy was just 17 at the time she completed high school. After matriculating at Ohio Central State College - which is now Central State University - for one term, Nancy quit to become an experienced performer. Her first record was recorded in 1956 with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. The band toured with her from 1956-1958. In the band, Nancy made her first recording on Dot Records. Cannonball adderley advised her to travel to New York in order to improve her career. She visited The Big Town, New York in 1959. Within a month she got a job singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road in The Bronx where Adderley's agent heard her, and she was signed. In 1960, he enlisted her to Capitol Records and in that the same year, she debuted her first single. Guess who saw today. Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. With the help of Adderley's influence the singer-songwriter shifted her focus away her focus from R&B to jazz. It led her to perform in New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America in the year following and she was a household name.
